Resources to Support Young Workers

This summer, many young Albertans will find jobs; some will be entering the workforce for the first time. These young workers are at higher risk of being injured at work. Factors that contribute to this include inadequate training and supervision, worker inexperience, and lack of awareness of workplace rights and responsibilities.

Young workers and their employers can find a number of resources at ohs-pubstore.labour.alberta.ca/young-worker. In addition, a Workers’ Compensation Board-Alberta community partnership called “HeadsUp” helps young Albertans understand the importance of good mental health and physical safety before entering the workforce. For more information on HeadsUp, visit wcb.ab.ca/about-wcb/community-partnerships/headsup.

Alberta OHS and Employment Standards are inviting young workers under 25 years old, their parents or guardians, and employers to a free webinar where they can learn about:

  • young worker rights and responsibilities
  • employer responsibilities in protecting young workers
  • identifying and controlling workplace hazards young workers might face
  • helpful resources to support young workers, parents or guardians, and employers

Young workers face higher risks on the job and are more likely to be injured at work, so this webinar is a crucial opportunity to learn more about improving health and safety knowledge and practices.
