We’re very excited to welcome your child and family to kindergarten for the 2024-25 school year.

Many caregivers have questions about preparing their child for the kindergarten experience. To help families throughout this process, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) has developed a five-week series of simple activities you can do this summer with your child.

This week, we start with an activity many families already do—reading books! We’ve compiled a list of suggestions to consider either continuing to do or adding into your book-reading routine. Any amount of reading benefits children. Research shows some small, simple tweaks can greatly increase the impact reading with your child can have.

Preparing for Kindergarten: Sharing a Book

Another great way to lay the foundation for early literacy is pointing out all the print that’s in the world around us. Spend time checking out labels, food boxes, signs, recipe books, magazines, newspapers and anywhere else you see print in your day-to-day activities.

Stay tuned for next week’s email about fine motor skills and details about our preparing for kindergarten contest!

We encourage you to visit the EIPS website and check out the additional resources available to support caregivers.
