Program Unit Funding (PUF) is provided by Alberta Education to school authorities for children with severe disabilities (based on formal diagnosis) who are older than two years, eight months of age and younger than four years, eight months of age on September 1 who require support beyond what is offered in regular Early Childhood Services (ECS) programs.
Information and documentation from qualified specialists must be completed before a child may be eligible for PUF. The child’s functioning levels are also considered in determining programming needs. For assessment and referral information, contact EIPS’ Early Learning Services at 780-417-8219.
Children who qualify may attend a pre-Kindergarten PALS (Play And Learn at School) program in one of the following locations:
- Ardrossan
- Fort Saskatchewan
- Lamont
- Sherwood Park
- Vegreville
Working in partnership with families, we support parents’ efforts in developing and reinforcing skills at home.
What funding is available for my child and how is this funded by Alberta Education (how do we access it)?
Alberta Education provides funding directly to the school division for eligible children.
How is PUF eligibility determined?
Alberta Education approves requests for funding based on the information provided to them. EIPS will submit information which could include: a physician’s letter confirming a diagnosis or delay, developmental assessments, or descriptions of concerns involving significant impacts on the child’s learning.
How long is PUF funding?
PUF may be accessed for a maximum of two years in the public school system, depending on the child’s individual needs and age when first approved.
Who applies for PUF?
Elk Island Public Schools applies for PUF funding from Alberta Education with parent’s permission.
How many programs can my child access through PUF?
A child can only access PUF with one school authority at a time. Families can choose to change or transfer between programs when appropriate. They do not need to stay with the same school authority for the entire three years.
