Overview
The New Alberta Curriculum
The Elementary Education team will support, guide, and mentor elementary schools as they begin to implement core teaching frameworks to support new curriculum. Much of this work will focus on "conceptual understanding" which will require students to deeply understand concepts and to transfer this understanding to real world situations and challenges. Literacy
Elementary Education consultants work with a number of cohorts of beginning (0-4 yrs. experience) division I and II teachers. Through mentoring, direct instruction and collegiality, our consultants ensure teachers are well supported as they deliver literacy instruction in the classroom.
The divisional Literacy Committee, under the leadership of our consultants, has developed a framework for EIPS Literacy Goals & Initiatives. Collaboration with teachers and administrators in achieving school literacy education goals is on-going and supported during School Based Professional Learning days.
Supporting literacy in the early years is another area of focus, with literacy initiatives in the PreSchool PALS program and in Kindergarten
Celebrating and highlighting student learning in literacy is another integral part of our work. We provide leadership for our annual Read In Week event Grade 4-9 Young Authors' Conference.
Numeracy
The Elementary Education team also works with K-6 teachers to develop and hone numeracy instructional skills. A variety of professional learning opportunities are offered each year, and coaching and support is available on an ongoing basis. Use these math resources at home with your child.
Assessment
Each EIPS school is required to post their "Guide to Reporting Student Learning" on their school's website. The Guide provides comprehensive information about assessment and reporting for all students.
As part of our ongoing goal to enhance literacy and numeracy skills of students in grades 1 - 12, STAR Early Literacy, STAR Reading and the Math Intervention/Programming Instrument (MIPI) are administered at least twice per year.
Professional Learning
With a focus on student and staff learning, we provide and support various professional learning opportunities within EIPS and outside of the division. As a team, we believe effective professional learning is instrumental in improving instruction, which in turn will lead to improved student achievement and engagement.
