“The summer solstice heralds the longest day of the year, a time where sunlight shines across the golden prairies, atop the glistening mountain peaks and in the sparkling currents of lakes and rivers. In such a brilliant splendour on June 21, we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day. June also marks National Indigenous History Month. During these milestones, we celebrate the rich cultures, perspectives and achievements of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples across Canada, illuminating our shared past and empowering us to work toward a brighter future of truth and reconciliation.
“Across the Division, schools are taking action to host respectful activities that seek to embrace Indigenous traditions with the wisdom and guidance of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Elders and educators. Through these activities, we work to honour the past, present and future of First Nations, Métis and Inuit families, and create a space where everyone can feel welcome, safe, respected and included. On behalf of EIPS, I encourage all students, staff and school communities to take the time to appreciate and enjoy National Indigenous History Month events and National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations throughout Elk Island Public Schools.”
