First Nations, Métis or Inuit Student Self-Identification
On school registration forms across Alberta, families may choose to self-identify students as First Nations (status), First Nations (non-status), Métis or Inuit. The response to the Indigenous self-identification question is voluntary. Alberta Education does not ask schools or students for proof of Indigenous identity; this is best determined by each individual family. If families choose to self-identify, the confidential information helps to inform funding, programming and initiatives at the provincial and Division level, including;
- support policy and funding decisions
- measure program effectiveness
- identify promising practices supporting First Nation, Métis and Inuit student success
- inform provincial reporting on First Nations, Métis and Inuit student achievement in Alberta schools
The data helps Alberta Education and EIPS:
- identify where additional programs, resources and supports are required
- understand what changes may be needed to improve the education system to benefit First Nations, Métis and Inuit students
- identify what programs are working
- ensure students are meeting provincial and Division targets
- inform work between the province and the Division to ensure support for First Nation, Métis and Inuit education for all students
Funding is provided to EIPS based on the number of self-identified First Nations, Métis or Inuit students registered. The funding is used to support a number of projects, including:
- Consultant and cultural advisor
- Lead teacher in each EIPS school
- Support staff, including educational assistants
- Language and culture supports
- Direct supports for self-identified students
- Professional development for Division staff
- Developing and purchasing First Nations, Métis and Inuit resources
- In-class lessons and experiences for all Division students
- Engaging Elders and knowledge holders
