Overview
The New Alberta Curriculum
The Secondary Education team will support, guide and mentor secondary schools as they begin to implement core teaching frameworks to support new curriculum. Much of this work will focus on conceptual understanding, which will require students to deeply understand concepts and transfer this understanding to real world situations and challenges. Literacy
Our Secondary Education team works with a number of cohorts of secondary teachers. Through deliberate professional learning, mentoring, one to one support and collegiality, we ensure teachers are well supported as they deliver literacy instruction in the classroom.
Celebrating and highlighting student learning in literacy is another integral part of our work. We provide leadership for our annual Read In Week event and the Grade 4-9 Young Authors' Conference.
Numeracy
The Secondary Education team also works with 7-12 teachers to develop and hone numeracy instructional skills. A variety of professional learning opportunities are offered each year, and coaching and support is available on an ongoing basis.
We participate in Week of Inspirational Math which inspires our teachers to teach open, visual and creative mathematics.
Career Pathways
The secondary team works hard to ensure our students have access to and are aware of the different opportunities that are available to them as they progress through EIPS.
We support:
- Your Future Post Secondary and Career Fair
- Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)
- Career and Technology Foundations (CTF)
- Career and Technology Studies (CTS)
- High School Culinary Challenge
Educational Technology
Our team works with staff to ensure instructional technology is being used to support and enhance teaching. Our consultants work to define and implement basic technology competencies and ensure digital citizenship is a focus in our schools.
Professional Learning
With a focus on student and staff learning, we provide and support various professional learning opportunities within EIPS and outside of the division. As a team, we believe effective professional learning is instrumental in improving instruction, which in turn will lead to improved student achievement and engagement.
Assessment
Each EIPS school is required to post their Guide to Reporting Student Learning on their school's website. This guide provides comprehensive information about assessment and reporting for all students.
As part of our ongoing goal to enhance literacy and numeracy skills of students in grades 1 - 12, STAR Early Literacy, STAR Reading and the Math Intervention/Programming Instrument (MIPI) are administered at least twice per year.
