Sherwood Park, AB. — From March 11-15, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is celebrating Substitute Appreciation Week, an opportunity to recognize substitutes and their vital role throughout the Division. Every day, substitutes step up to the plate in classrooms and school offices to support student learning and keep schools running smoothly.
“Substitutes create a positive and engaging atmosphere in the classroom,” says Rogeet Ghuman, a substitute teacher and part-time contract teacher at EIPS. “They bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm and a different teaching style, contributing to a diverse and enriching educational experience for students.”
Ghuman’s career journey has allowed him to grow in the teaching profession and explore the Division. “Starting out as a substitute in March 2021, I had no clue what each day would throw at me. Every day brought challenges, such as visiting different schools and meeting new people. However, as I continued to take more steps into the unknown and get out of my comfort zone consistently, every day quickly became a chance to grow and learn. From kindergarteners to high school seniors, I keep meeting new faces with stories to tell.”
For Ghuman, he sees the impact he’s making daily. “Building connections with awesome kids from such diverse backgrounds has been the best part of substitute teaching. Seeing a student's face light up when they see me in the morning as their substitute teacher, a student finally getting a tricky concept or myself getting high-fives down the hallway tells me that I’m making a difference in these kids’ lives.”
Ghuman is one of many substitute teachers and non-teaching substitutes who work within EIPS, from elementary to senior high—in general education, specialized programming and school support. Without their assistance and dedication, EIPS schools would run much less smoothly.
Thank you to all the substitutes throughout EIPS for all that you do!
