Sherwood Park, AB. — From May 5-10, Strathcona Christian Academy (SCA) Secondary students are exploring the depths of the ocean and discovering the world on the surface during their musical production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. “This show has given me the unique opportunity to grow in my confidence as a performer within an exceptionally welcoming and supportive community of friends and coaches,” says Petra Dueck, a Grade 11 student at SCA Secondary playing the part of Ariel. “The SCA productions bring a smile to my face every practice and tears to my eyes at the end of every show. I am truly thankful for this program and its impact on my life.”
The musical will take place at the Sherwood Park Alliance Church and features various showtimes, from afternoon matinees to evening performances. “The SCA musical theatre community is like no other,” says Tony Lavorato, a Grade 11 student at SCA Secondary playing the part of Sebastian. “It’s not just pumped full of jaw-dropping talent, but also an unfathomable amount of support and care for every student. Each cast member has devoted countless hours and unwavering commitment to this production—to put on a performance for all to enjoy.”
Doors will open 30 minutes prior to each show, where Ariel’s Grotto and Concession will be open. There’ll also be a short intermission. Ten of the roles are double cast, so attendees can choose whether to see the Land or Sea cast perform.
Samantha Jones, a teacher at SCA Secondary who directed and produced the show, is excited to share what students have accomplished. “I have seen my 61 students grow so much this year, and I am so proud of them all! They’ve learned many applicable skills, including public speaking, singing, dancing and acting. This show is going to be so beautiful thanks to them and the help of my team: Leigh Park, Stacey Lavorato, Luke Lavorato and Taylor Fawcett. They’ve given their everything to making this show a success.”
Jones can’t understate the benefit of musical theatre on student learning and the impact it’s had on her. “Teaching musical theatre is the most rewarding experience. Theatre is a place where students can step outside of their comfort zones and show a different side of them. My goal is to create a welcoming culture where we can laugh, cry and grow together. It’s a safe space to develop confidence, responsibility and respect for others.”
Nolan Goertzen, a Grade 11 student at SCA Secondary also playing the part of Sebastian, agrees with Jones. “The nice thing about theatre is that it’s a natural human thing. It’s always a new experience and there’s always something new to learn. It's an opportunity to be with our friends, express ourselves and share a great show with our audience.”
