Volunteers at Uncas Elementary support initiatives that enrich experiences for students at school.
Sherwood Park, AB. — From April 27 to May 3, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is recognizing the committed efforts of volunteers in schools across the Division this National Volunteer Week. “Our school council is dedicated to creating the best possible experience for all students at Uncas Elementary,” says Keri Elko, President of the Uncas Parent Advisory Council. “Each year, we work hard to provide meaningful support in classrooms and beyond—from funding school supplies and field trips to accommodating special requests for items, such as playground equipment, wobble chairs and Chromebooks.”
Elko and the school council dedicate their time to planning initiatives that enhance student success. “One of the ways we support our school community is through organizing and delivering a hot lunch program. Thanks to a wonderful collaboration with Ardrossan Elementary, we’re able to provide a fresh, prepared meal once a week—a highlight for many students! We also run treat days, and a student favourite is pizza on Early Out Wednesdays. Keeping our community informed takes a lot of effort, from monthly newsletters to weekly updates to our social media, but we’re always seeking ways to connect.”
Elko is also proud to be expanding the types of opportunities the council supports. “Some of our newest initiatives include volunteer aid for an Indigenous-led paint night and hosting Saffron presentations, which help foster stronger family connections and promote awareness of digital safety in our ever-evolving cyber world.”
The school council at Uncas Elementary would not be able to support these initiatives without the help of volunteers from its school community. “Many of our programs are powered by long-time, dedicated volunteers, including our Bus to Swim program—one of our longest-running and most volunteer-intensive initiatives. These individuals are the heart of our school community, showing up year-after-year to make these opportunities possible.”
Staff at Uncas Elementary are grateful to have so many volunteers support students. “We’re extremely fortunate to have excellent volunteers in our community to help out wherever and whenever needed,” says TJ Kennerd, the Principal at the school. “On behalf of the students and staff at Uncas Elementary, I want to express our sincere gratitude for your invaluable help during these events and many more. Your dedication and willingness to volunteer is truly appreciated, and your efforts make a profound difference in our community.”
Elko cannot understate the value of volunteers at Uncas Elementary. “As President of the advisory council, I’m incredibly grateful for our members and volunteers,” says Elko. “Each year, I look forward to welcoming new faces and reconnecting with returning ones. What I love most is seeing how our shared commitment helps shape our school—engaging families, supporting staff and creating more opportunities for our kids. Being successful means working together, and I couldn’t ask for a better team to do that with.”
Elk Island Public Schools is one of Alberta’s largest school divisions, serving approximately 17,950 students in 42 schools. We are proud to be an integral part of our communities, including Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Vegreville, Strathcona and Lamont counties, and the western portion of the County of Minburn.
