Sherwood Park, AB. — Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) students can step into alternative choices for academic success within the outreach programs at Next Step. “Next Step provides the flexibility I need to balance school and work, while working toward my goals and helping me graduate early,” says Bella Roszell, a Grade 11 student at the school. “The supportive teachers are always available to help, making me feel confident in my ability to succeed. With their guidance, I feel prepared to excel in college and pursue my dream of going to law school.”

Next Step operates in three community-based locations—Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan and Vegreville. Programming is offered to students in grades 10 through 12, depending on campus location. The school provides a supportive and comfortable environment for students who for various reasons, require an individualized program not available at other EIPS schools.

Students at Next Step provide input on their program from the start—such as designing their own attendance and work completion schedules in collaboration with staff. The school ensures students have ample guidance and encouragement so they can complete their educational goals successfully.

“The amazing part about Next Step is the ability to individualize programs to meet students’ unique learning styles and needs,” says Cindy O’Neill, a teacher at Next Step. “Whether the student is looking for courses not available at their designated school or need a project-based learning program to fill in gaps in their education, staff build relationships with the students to make the learning relevant. Our personalized approach not only fosters confidence but also encourages students to take ownership of their educational journey.”

Students can attend Next Step several ways:

  • As a full-time student—grades 10, 11 and 12.
  • As a returning Grade 12 student—who recently graduated from an EIPS senior high school.
  • As a shared student—who’s concurrently registered at any EIPS senior high school.
  • Additionally, Next Step Sherwood Park offers a summer school program for grades 9 through 12 students.

Interested grades 10-12 students and families are invited to attend an upcoming Next Step open house at the following locations. For more event details, click on the session location.

New and returning students may apply to Next Step during the registration process beginning in February. Before registration at Next Step is confirmed, staff will contact students to discuss their education plans and goals.

For key registration dates, see the EIPS Guide to Registration 2025-26.
