Sherwood Park, AB. — Fultonvale Elementary Junior High students celebrated the spooky season last week as they participated in the school’s annual Zombie Run.
In the forest surrounding the school, grades 5-9 students ran along the trails as their fellow peers in the leadership program donned zombie costumes, hid in the trees and tried to spook their schoolmates. The event not only tests the planning skills of the school’s leadership students—it fosters a sense of community among everyone at the school in a fun and active environment.
While older students took part in the scarier Zombie Run in the afternoon, students in kindergarten to Grade 4 enjoyed the Freddie Firebird Fun Run in the morning. Instead of dressing as the undead, leadership students dressed up as various animals. Their younger peers found them hiding among the trees and guessed which animal they were portraying.
“The Fun Run and Zombie Run are great,” says Kelti Stevenson, a Grade 8 student at Fultonvale Elementary Junior High. “The younger kids love seeing Freddie the Firebird and the older kids like to be scared and hang out with their friends.”
Many schools across Elk Island Public Schools host events similar to Fultonvale’s Zombie Run and Freddie Firebird Fun Run throughout the month of October. From spooky movie nights to Halloween costume parades, these events increase relationship-building in school communities and provide students with memories to take with them as they learn and grow.
“These annual runs provide a leadership opportunity for older students to build a sense of community amongst our beautiful trees and trails,” says Olesia Babyn, a teacher at Fultonvale Elementary Junior High.
Thank you to all the staff, students, parents, caregivers and community volunteers that dedicate their time and effort into making these events a reality for schools across the Division!
