Sherwood Park, AB. — As a provider of choice in education, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) consistently delivers a broad range of programming options for students of varied backgrounds and interests. From specialized languages and faith-based programs to advanced academic opportunities and competitive sports, students within the Division have the chance to push past their limits and find meaningful ways to contribute to and grow their communities.
One program that places a strong value on service is the Division’s Logos Christian program—offered from kindergarten through Grade 9. The Logos program follows the Alberta curriculum and provides instruction in an uplifting environment, grounded in Christian principles. Following the Bible and the Apostles’ Creed, students focus on loving God and one another, committing to Christ’s teachings and taking accountability for their personal actions.
“The Logos program is deeply valuable for discovering who you are, both within and outside of the classroom,” says Jessica Wood, an alumna of Logos. “It’s such a gift to learn about your interests, passions and personality while growing in a deeper understanding of your value in Christ. The different parts of who you are all come together to create a unique identity.”
The program includes devotions, a time for students to glorify God and grow spiritually in the Christian faith. Homeroom classes begin with prayer, and other devotional activities may include viewing Christian multimedia, reading scripture and participating in opportunities to serve others. Chapel prayers may also include musical or theatrical presentations.
“Our family’s been part of the Logos program for eight years now,” says Colleen Chorney, a parent of students currently in Logos. “The teachers are amazing—they’re approachable, caring and transparent, willing to help with any questions they can. My children learn what faith means every day in a school they love alongside their treasured peers.”
Students can currently enter the Logos program in kindergarten to Grade 6 at Brentwood Elementary or Westboro Elementary in Sherwood Park. The program continues at Sherwood Heights Junior High from grades 7-9. After Grade 9, students who wish to continue learning in a Christian context may consider applying at Strathcona Christian Academy Secondary.
“My children attended Logos years ago,” says Yolande Tkachyk, a parent of students who were in the program. “They were taught how to deepen their lens of the world through a biblical scope. The faithful tenets we were teaching at home—Christian principles, devotions and holidays—were being taught at school too.”
New and returning students may apply to the Logos program during the 2023-24 registration process beginning February 1.
“By having a foundation of who you are, you’re better equipped to live with confidence in school, in faith and in life,” says Wood.
Elk Island Public Schools is one of Alberta’s largest school divisions, serving approximately 17,460 students in 43 schools.
