Sherwood Park, AB. — Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 have the option to grow in their faith as they journey into one of the several Christian programs at Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS). “We get to learn things from a Christian perspective which means we can dig a little deeper,” says Maeve Mast, a Grade 6 student at Brentwood Elementary. “I learn all the normal stuff but I also get to learn about Jesus. And the teachers make learning about God so much fun!”

Students enrolled in Logos Christian and Alternative Christian programs within EIPS receive religious Christian, Bible-based courses, instruction, exercises and instructional materials. “Alternative Christian programming allows students to grow in their faith in a safe and nurturing classroom environment,” says Jeanette Puttick, a teacher at Strathcona Christian Academy Secondary. “A faith-based learning environment integrates biblical principles into the everyday life of a student. Students may uncover God in the intricacies of science and mathematics or discover His heart for the marginalized as seen in social justice. They're encouraged in their faith journey through prayer and Scripture and challenged to look through the lens of God’s love for the world.”

The Division’s Christian programs weave a religious perspective into every class. “The Christian worldview is integrated across subject areas and students are viewed as unique creations of God,” says Puttick. “With this in mind, teachers aim to teach holistically, focusing not only on a child’s intellectual progress, but also their spiritual, social and emotional growth. The community created is supportive and inclusive with a focus on God’s love for His people.”

Students can currently enter the Logos Christian program in Kindergarten to Grade 6 at Brentwood Elementary in Sherwood Park. The program continues at Sherwood Heights Junior High from grades 7-9.

In Sherwood Park, Alternative Christian programming is available at Strathcona Christian Academy Elementary from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and Strathcona Christian Academy Secondary from grades 7-12. Fort Saskatchewan Christian offers an Alternative Christian program from Kindergarten to Grade 9.

“My favourite part about being in Logos is being able to learn more and more about our Lord and Saviour and being surrounded by people who share the same faith and beliefs as me,” says Georgia Bullick, a Grade 6 student at Brentwood Elementary. “I learn about the Lord and his teachings and how to follow them in my everyday life. My favourite Logos activity has to be our monthly chapel. It brings joy, new activities and teachings to me and my fellow schoolmates.”
